Working as a delivery driver
Last summer, I worked as a delivery driver for a local pizza restaurant. It was my first full-time job, and I learned a lot during those three months. My main responsibilities were picking up freshly made pizzas from the restaurant and delivering them to customers’ homes. The job seemed easy at first, but it was much more challenging than I had expected.
Every morning, I arrived at the restaurant at 10:00 a.m. to collect my delivery list for the day. The manager gave me a schedule with the addresses and times for each delivery. I had to make sure that the pizzas arrived hot and on time. I used my bike for deliveries, so I also had to know the quickest routes around the neighborhood. Sometimes, finding the right address was difficult, especially when the weather was bad. Riding a bike in the rain or during strong winds was exhausting, but I always tried to stay positive.
The restaurant was busiest in the evenings. Families often ordered pizzas for dinner, and I had to deliver as quickly as possible. On Fridays and Saturdays, I delivered over 20 pizzas in one night! I enjoyed meeting different people during my deliveries. Most customers were friendly and thanked me for bringing their food. Some even gave me tips, which I saved for a new phone. However, not all experiences were good. Once, I delivered a pizza to a house, but nobody opened the door. I waited for 15 minutes, and finally, I had to return to the restaurant. The manager explained that the customer had changed their mind and forgotten to cancel the order. It was frustrating, but it taught me to be patient.
One of my favorite memories from the job was when a family invited me inside to join their birthday celebration. They insisted I have a slice of pizza with them, and we took a photo together. Moments like these made the hard work worth it.
At the end of each shift, I returned to the restaurant, handed in my delivery bag, and shared stories with my coworkers. Although the job was tiring, it gave me a sense of responsibility and independence. I learned how to manage my time and solve problems quickly. Looking back, it was a great experience, and I am proud of what I achieved.
